A Weekend Escape 30 Minutes from Madrid: Staying at a Private Finca

Madrid is a brilliant city for four days and an exhausting one for a fifth. By Sunday morning, most visitors are craving the thing the city can’t offer: quiet, horizon, and somewhere to sit still. The good news is that it’s closer than people assume — not a four-hour drive to the coast, but half an hour into the hills, where a very different kind of weekend starts.

Why a finca instead of a hotel

A hotel, however good, is a room with other people’s rooms on either side. What a weekend actually looks like

Arrive Friday afternoon, in time to watch the sun drop behind the olive trees with a drink in hand. Saturday belongs to Chinchón — ten minutes away, its 15th-century Plaza Mayor ringed by 234 wooden balconies is one of the loveliest squares in Spain, and worth an unhurried morning: coffee on the square, a wander through the lanes, a tasting of the local anís that gave the town its name. Back at the finca by early afternoon for the pool, or a slow walk among the horses and olive trees.

Saturday evening is where the finca does its best work: dinner outdoors if the weather allows, then — if the night is clear and the moon is elsewhere — a look up. The skies here are genuinely dark, far enough from Madrid’s glow that on a good night you can pick out far more than the city ever shows you.

Sunday is for doing as little as possible before the drive back to Barajas, thirty minutes away.

Who it suits

Couples looking for a quiet reset without a long-haul flight. Friends splitting a house rather than four hotel rooms. Anyone who’s spent a work week in meeting rooms and wants two days where the biggest decision is whether to swim before or after lunch. The finca sleeps up to 14 across seven bedrooms, so it works equally well as a couple’s escape or a full house of friends sharing the cost of something considerably nicer than any of them would book alone.

The bit people don’t expect

Guests are often surprised by how close it all is — thirty minutes from an international airport, and still a landscape of olive groves, working stables and star-filled skies.
